Apophis Asteroid Not a Danger but ‘A real chance’ for Study
Russian scientists last week said that the Apophis asteroid may collide with the earth in 2036 but a report came out this week which said the chance of it striking the earth is highly unlikely.

And, if the object gets close enough, it would be a good research opportunity, a space scientist told the International Business Times.

Apophis, at its closest point in 2029, will be at least 18,300 miles away from the Earth. Dan Durda, a scientist with the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado, told the Times that he submitted a proposal to NASA to send a spacecraft to the asteroid and learn more about it.

"It's a real chance to study this kind of object," Durda told the publication.

Durda added that a mission to probe the asteroid would have to be launched in 2021 due to Apophis’s tilted orbit.
Real Danger?

Life’s Little Mysteries, sister site of Space.com, reported that there is just a 1-in-250,000 chance that the object, which is around 900-feet-long, will strike the earth in 25 years, citing NASA scientists.

In 2029, Apophis will fly close to the Earth and “will be quite an event.” However, that the possibility of it striking the earth has been “ruled out,” Donald Yeomans, the chief of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office told Life’s Little Mysteries.

But if the asteroid goes through “what we call a keyhole during that close Earth approach … then it will indeed be perturbed just right so that it will come back and smack Earth on April 13, 2036,” Yeomans said, adding that the chances of entering this gravitational “keyhole” is “miniscule,” Space reported.

Professor Leonid Sokolov at St. Petersburg State University told the publication Science it is unlikely that Apophis will hit Earth because the asteroid will probably break up into fragments before then .

New Theory for Mona Lisa Painting
For centuries, people have been speculating about who modeled for Leonardo Da Vinci's "Mona Lisa." Was it Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine merchant? Was it Isabella of Aragon? Was it the artist himself, as some experts believe? Or was it, as new research suggests, none of the above?

An Italian art historian, Silvano Vinceti, believes the model for the "Mona Lisa" was a man named Gian Giacomo Caprotti, better known as Salai, a male apprentice (and possible lover) of da Vinci.

At a press conference in Rome on Wednesday, Vinceti explained his theory. "Salai was a favorite model for Leonardo," Vinceti said. "Leonardo certainly inserted characteristics of Salai in the last version of the 'Mona Lisa.'" Vinceti pointed out the similarities between the noses and mouths as examples.

Following the press conference, Web searches on "da vinci salai" and "gian giacomo caprotti" both soared.

Earlier this year, Vinceti remarked that he discovered some objects in the eyes of the "Mona Lisa." He says he has found the letter "S" in the woman's left eye, the letter "L" in her right eye, and the number "72" under the bridge in the background. The images are not visible to the naked eye. Scientific equipment was used.

Vinceti doesn't necessarily believe that Salai was the only inspiration for the world's most famous painting. At the press conference, the historian said, "the 'Mona Lisa' must be read at various levels, not just as a portrait." In other words, according to Vinceti, there were likely multiple inspirations for the painting.

Not everyone agrees with Vinceti's opinions. In an interview with the AP, Marani, an art professor at Milan's Politecnico University, called Vinceti's theory "groundless." He further remarked, "The work ('Mona Lisa') began as the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, but over the years in Leonardo's hands it slowly turned into something else: an idealized portrait, not a specific one."

This isn't the first time an art expert has linked Salai to one of da Vinci's works. Vinceti believes other works, including "St. John the Baptist," were also based on Salai. Others have floated the "Mona Lisa" theory as well.

CNN producer Steve Brusk Tweeted, "Anderson said he was punched 10 times in the head as pro-Mubarak mob surrounded him and his crew trying to cover demonstration."

Cooper then escaped to the roof of a nearby building, where he said on air that he and his crew were trying to get to a neutral zone between protestors and pro-Mubarak supporters when they "were set upon by pro-Mubarak supporters punching us in the head. The crowd kept growing, kept throwing punches, kicks...suddenly a young man would look at you and punch you in the face."

Cooper told CNN's live blog that the attackers "pushed and shoved the CNN crew and punched them in the head... but no one was seriously hurt."

Added Brusk on Twitter, "Live images now of crowds on opposite side of trucks throwing rocks. A CNN reporter called earlier scene snowball fight with rocks."

CNN's Ben Wedeman told the blog that "he overheard a panicked army officer say the situation was out of control and there was nothing the army could do to restore order."

Cooper landed in the country Sunday night to cover the protests againt President Hosni Mubarak, who has been in power for 30 years.
"It's a fast-changing situation," he told The Huffington Post Monday. "It feels like it changes every few hours."

On Monday, Christiane Amanpour called The Hollywood Reporter from Cairo, where she had been reporting since Saturday.

"We had no idea what to expect,” she said. “But it is always more scary from the outside than it is from the inside.”

The journey from the Cairo International Airport to her hotel took over an hour because "every 50 to 100 yards our car was stopped and there were people with machetes, meat cleavers, swords, rifles, metal bars,” she said. “Once they saw [who we were], they waved us through. I would describe the journey as tense but friendly.”

A sting operation by Google reveals that Microsoft has been copying results from Google for its Bing search engine.

The search giant alleges that Microsoft has been using its Internet Explorer web browser and the Bing Search bar to harvest information on Google users, according to a lengthy report by Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land. Amit Singhal, a Google Fellow who oversees the search engine’s ranking algorithm, was crystal clear about the findings.

“Our testing has concluded that Bing is copying Google web search results,” Singhal told FoxNews.com.

It’s a serious allegation from the world’s most popular search engine, a company that takes pride in the quality of its product.

"I've spent my career in pursuit of a good search engine," Singhal told Search Engine Land. "I've got no problem with a competitor developing an innovative algorithm. But copying is not innovation, in my book."

Bing, although denying that they outright copy results, and has all but admitted the claim. Director of Bing Stefan Weitz told FoxNews.com that the strategy is one of many that Microsoft uses to provide the best search results.

“We use multiple signals and approaches in ranking search results,” Weitz said. “The overarching goal is to do a better job determining the intent of the search so we can provide the most relevant answer to a given query.”

Harry Shum, corporate vice president at Bing, spoke at a company event Tuesday, furthering these sentiments. “It’s not like we actually copy anything,” Shum said at the event. He claimed that competitors such as Google employ similar tactics. “We use the customer data to help improve the search experience.”

Google is understandably vexed. The company grew wary of potential copycats in October 2010 when engineers noticed that bizarre misspellings were returning the same set of results on both Google and Bing searches.

Unsure, but suspicious, Google set up a trap. From December 17 to December 31, engineers inserted a “honeypot” result as the top result for specific search queries -- including, hiybbprqag, mbzrxpgiys, and indoswiftjobinproduction -- and waited to see if the same results would appear on Bing. Lo and behold, the identical results popped up.

"It's cheating to me because we work incredibly hard and have done so for years -- but they just get there based on our hard work,” a frustrated Singhal told Sullivan. “I don't know how else to call it but plain and simple cheating. Another analogy is that it's like running a marathon and carrying someone else on your back, who jumps off just before the finish line."

On the official Bing blog, Shum called the Google ploy a “spy-novelesque stunt,” a “creative tactic by a competitor, that Bing was actually taking as a back-handed compliment.”

“It doesn’t accurately portray how we use opt-in customer data as one of many inputs to help improve our user experience,” Shum wrote.

It's difficult to say how this discovery will affect the search experience for consumers, Sullivan told FoxNews.com, because we really don't know the extent of Bing's usage of Google data.

”It potentially makes the search engines more the same,” he allowed, “and my gut feeling is that we want them to have some differentiation. That's because being more Google-like isn't a guarantee that you're necessarily improving results.

Ariel Indonesia sex tape star is jailed

A court in Indonesia has sentenced one of South East Asia's best known pop stars to three-and-a-half years in prison for making and distributing sex videos on the internet.

The tapes of Nazril Irham, or Ariel as he is known, and two other celebrities one of them are Luna Maya, were made public last June.

He is the first celebrity to be charged under Indonesia's strict pornography law that came into effect in 2008.

Ariel denied distributing the videos, saying they had been stolen.

Ariel had made three sex videos featuring him and separately, two female celebrities.

The 29-year-old was found guilty of "giving an opportunity for others to spread, produce and prepare a pornographic video", according to the verdict.

"As a public figure, the defendant should be aware that fans might imitate his behaviour," said Judge Singgih Budi Prakoso.

He said that Ariel had done nothing to prevent the wide distribution of the videos.
Cultural divide

Ariel was speechless on hearing the verdict, and his teenage fans who filled the court room broke down in tears, says the BBC's Alice Budisatrijo, who was at the court in Bandung.

The singer's lawyer said he would appeal against the sentence and criticised the judges' admission that they were influenced by public pressure.

Outside the court, hundreds of protesters had gathered calling for a harsher punishment.

The charge carried a maximum 12-year sentence and a fine of more than $600,000 (£403,000).

The trial has become a target for protests by hard-line Muslim groups who have adopted pornography as a banner issue, claiming it symbolises what they have called the nation's moral decline.

The Blackberry telephone provider, Research In Motion (RIM), has also been asked by the government to prevent pornographic content from being made available through their devices if they wish to maintain distribution in Indonesia.

The case has exposed the deep cultural divide in the country, our correspondent says.

Indonesia is a secular state with a long tradition of tolerance, but with more democracy in the past decade, Muslim political groups have tested their strength through morality and corruption campaigns.

Hard-Luck 'Idol' Contestant Chris Medina Has Web Buzzing

There were many memorable "American Idol" contestants Wednesday night in Milwaukee, but the one that's spiking in Yahoo! Search and top-trending on Twitter is by an unassuming Illinois man named Chris Medina. However, his audition was somewhat polarizing, with some viewers (including myself) deeply moved by his incredible sob story, and other, more cynical ones accusing him of exploiting the woman in his life.

In October 2009, only two months before they were supposed to wed, Chris's 23-year-old fiancée Juliana Ramos sustained a traumatic brain injury in a horrific car crash and lapsed into a lengthy coma. She has yet to recover from her massive, life-changing injuries, and since the accident, Chris has dedicated himself to being her caretaker. "What kind of guy would I be if I walked out when she needed me the most?" he explained.

Even in a season already packed with sob stories, this one was a doozy--in fact maybe the sobbiest sob story in all 10 "Idol" seasons. Even class-clown judge Steven Tyler became visibly choked up when Chris brought the wheelchair-bound Juliana into the audition room to say hello, hugging her and telling her through tears, "That's why he sings so good, because he sings to you."

It was a TV moment that would seemingly melt the heart of even toughie Simon Cowell. But in an "Idol" age of general sob-story fatigue, after seasons of cancer survivors, foster kids, orphans, and struggling single parents, some nasty blogs and commenters are now accusing Chris of exploiting his misfortune--or, more specifically, Juliana's--to further his musical career. It's far from the first time such accusations have been thrown around regarding "Idol"--another Milwaukee contestant, young widower Danny Gokey, who frequently spoke about his deceased wife Sofia, comes to mind.

And I suppose I see such points. Let's face it, Chris's audition was good, but not great. He was far from the best singer of the night. We wouldn't even be talking about him now if it weren't for Juliana's tragic tale. What was memorable about him wasn't his song, or his voice, or his stage presence. It was his back story. But TV producers love this sort of tearjerking tale and the buzz it creates. So if any exploitation was perpetrated, the producers are probably to blame, not Chris.

Additionally, there's the issue of who will care for Juliana if Chris competes in Hollywood for months, or that his band back home is unfortunately named the Able Body, or that the moment when Juliana was wheeled into the audition room, looking confused and unable to communicate, was a bit uncomfortable to watch. But you know what? Sometimes LIFE is uncomfortable. It's not always pretty or easy. Really now, if Chris was such a jerk, as his detractors claim, then he would have abandoned Juliana months ago. Very few men Chris's age would have the courage and character to stick by her like he has. Perhaps what makes some viewers uncomfortable is the nagging realization that they might not be so noble if they were in his shoes.

Even a quick look at the Laurus Foundation webpage set up to collect donations for Juliana's medical expenses, or the "For Juliana" Facebook tribute page co-run by Chris and Juliana's mother, Janet Barnes, indicates that Chris is the real deal. This week on the Facebook page, Janet blogged:

"There is a man in our lives that has risen from a crisis to be a hero. You know that already because I have said it a hundred times in a hundred ways through this blog. Our very own Chris Medina has spent days and nights, losing blood, sweat and oh yes A LOT of tears to beg his fiancée back to health. And through it all he has become deeper, more centered, and an even more soulful individual. This has been witnessed by all of us from his mannerisms to his music. If you didn't love him before, you do now. If you DID love him, you now adore him."

Clearly much, if not all, of America now adores Chris too. It remains to be seen if he can win this thing--like I said, his voice is not the best of the bunch--but if his "Idol" audition draws attention to Juliana's cause and helps them build a better future together, then that's a good thing. Chad Ochocinco is changing his name again
Chad Johnson is making a comeback. Three years after changing his last name to Ochocinco, the man born Chad Javon Johnson will be going back to his given surname.

"I've done enough with Ochocinco," the former Mr. Johnson told ESPN's Trey Wingo. Yes, like having the least productive stretch of his career since the name change became official.

Ochocinco didn't elaborate on why he was making the change, but given that his return to Cincinnati is questionable, the logical explanation is that he wants a fresh start wherever he ends up. That means no silly name changes and probably no fighting with his coach, like he's currently doing now. (If Ochocinco does stay in Cincinnati, he'd have to pay for the unsold "Ochocinco" jerseys.)

I didn't think it was possible for me to care about anything less than whether Brett Favre(notes) retired or not. Then Ochocinco announced the name re-change. Frankly, I feel used by this whole process. For months I resisted calling him Ochocinco because it was so preposterous and felt like when I asked all my friends to call me He-Man. Of course, I was in first grade at the time.

At some point, though, he became Ochocinco. Whether it was the repetition in hearing it or the fact that I had to write it here on Shutdown Corner, I don't know. It was a gradual process. Whenever it happened, it happened, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Nobody really wanted to call him Ochocinco but eventually we all did.

And isn't that the grand achievement in all this? He managed to make having "OCHOCINCO" on the back of his jersey so normal that it lost its absurdity. That's why he's going back to Johnson, not because he wants to mature, but because Ochocinco lost its shock value. Those teenage girls at the mall don't keep their pink hair forever either.

Don't stop mangling your Spanish quite yet, though. Ochocinco hasn't filed the paperwork yet for the name change and has gone back on this promise before. In 2009, he said he'd change it back if Darrelle Revis(notes) shut him down in a game. Revis did and Ochocinco didn't follow through.

Q: Growing tired of the Facebook privacy scandals, I tried to leave the social network, but you need to be a member now to access a number of outside websites. How can I get around this?

A: Facebook, as you're well aware by this point, has a history of privacy scandals. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is constantly trying to push what privacy means in the 21st century — how transparent should we all be on the Internet? — but with each step, a significant number of users push back. Last week, Facebook announced on its Developers blog that it was making it possible for third-party applications to gain access to users' mobile phone numbers and addresses. By early Monday morning the Facebook team had dialed back the change until further notice.

Some of the privacy issues have been just too much for users, resulting in cancelled accounts. But more and more organizations are joining the Facebook Connect network and incorporating the site's development tools into their own. It's getting to the point where you're at a disadvantage if you don't have a Facebook account; you can use it to log in with the same username and password on more than two million sites — it's not just for checking in on your cousin's newest baby pictures. So, here's the trick: You can go nearly invisible on Facebook — nobody will be able to view your photographs, see your activity or where you've checked in except for existing friends — but still have an account to use around the web.

If you're ready to move into Facebook stealth mode, follow these simple steps:

• Visit Facebook.com, log in to your profile and click 'Account' in the top-right corner. From there, choose 'Privacy Settings.'

• From the 'Privacy Settings' page, click on 'View Settings' to see who can search for you, send messages to your account, see your education and work settings and more. Change all of these drop-down menus to 'Friends Only.'

• Return to the 'Privacy Settings' page and choose 'Customize Settings' near the bottom of the page. This new page will load a number of different privacy options, but you'll want to click through each one and change the setting to 'Only Me' so that nobody else can see your Facebook activity.

Facebook Turns Friend Activity Into New Ad Format
Facebook is rolling out Sponsored Stories, a new ad format that turns your friends’ actions into promoted content.
Sponsored Stories is “a way for marketers to sponsor activities that happen throughout the News Feed,” a Facebook executive told Mashable. Companies can choose to take certain user actions — such as checkins or actions within Facebook apps — and feature them in the column on the right side of the News Feed.
For example, if you’re Whole Foods and you’re looking to increase your exposure on Facebook, you can pay to have a percentage of all checkins to Whole Foods featured in a Sponsored Stories slot in the right-side column. Your content wouldn’t be shown directly, but the actions of a user’s friends would appear. Users seeing their friends “liking” or checking in to Whole Foods will drive increased trust and increased traffic.
“The advertiser is not controlling the message; it’s about actions,” our Facebook contact said.

Starting today, four specific types of user actions can be turned into featured stories: likes, checkins, actions within custom applications and Page posts. If a company has a custom app (e.g. Starbucks Card or even FarmVille), it can promote the actions users take within them. The same is true of users posting on the walls of their favorite brands.
Facebook’s roster of launch partners includes Coke, Levi’s, Anheuser Busch and Playfish. Also, the social network is partnering with a slew of nonprofits for Sponsored Stories, including Donors Choose, Girl Up!, Malaria No More, Amnesty International, Women for Women, Autism Speaks, (RED), Alzheimer’s Association and UNICEF. However, anybody will be able to bid on Sponsored Story slots (by a per-impression and/or a per-click basis) starting January 25.
We haven’t seen Facebook play with new ad formats for a while — most of its revenue comes from the targeted advertising that appears on most Facebook pages. It has been timid about new ad formats after the spectacular failure of Beacon. Sponsored Stories seems like a simple and logical way to introduce new forms of advertising into Facebook’s system, though.
Sponsored Stories has a lot of similarities to Twitter Promoted Tweets. Both are trying to use content from within their networks and turn them into advertising dollars. There is one key difference between Sponsored Stories and Promoted Tweets, though: The user defines the advertised content in Facebook’s format, not the advertiser.
It’s that one little difference Facebook hopes will turn into big bucks.

Suicide bomb in the Moscow airport
Russian investigators say a suicide bomber most likely carried out the attack that killed at least 31 people and wounded over 140 at Moscow's busiest airport.

Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin says experts are now trying to identify the suspected bomber.

The explosion ripped through the international arrivals hall at Domodedovo Airport on Monday afternoon.

MOSCOW (AP) — An explosion ripped through the international arrivals hall at Moscow's busiest airport on Monday, killing at least 31 people and wounding up to 145 as it coated the terminal in blood. The Russian president called it a terror attack.

The mid-afternoon explosion at Domodedovo Airport may have been caused by a suicide bomber, the state RIA Novosti news agency reported. Other Russian media reports said the bomb was packed with shrapnel, screws and ball bearings.

The terminal at Domodedovo Airport was engulfed by smoke and splattered with body parts. Amateur video posted on YouTube showed a pile of bodies on the floor, and other bodies scattered around. Luggage lay strewn across the ground and several small fires burned. A dazed man in a suit pushed a baggage cart through the carnage.

"From the preliminary information we have, it was a terror attack," President Dmitry Medvedev told officials in a televised briefing, saying it was clear that security had been breached.

He immediately ordered authorities to beef up security at Moscow's two other commercial airports and other key transport facilities. Medvedev also postponed his own planned departure Tuesday for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he was to give the opening address on Wednesday.

In Washington, President Barack Obama condemned the `outrageous act of terrorism' in Moscow.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion. Chechen militants have claimed responsibility for previous terror attacks in Moscow, including a double suicide bombing on the subway in March 2010 that killed 40 people and wounded more than 100.

Large-scale battles in Chechnya ended years ago, following two devastating wars between Russia and the region's separatists, but Islamic militants have continued to carry out suicide bombings and other attacks. Most of the attacks have been in Chechnya and other predominantly Muslim provinces in the southern Caucasus region, but some have targeted Moscow, including its subways, buses and trains.

Car rental agent Alexei Spiridonov, 25, was at his desk when the blast struck about 100 yards (meters) away.

"The explosion was so strong that it threw me against the wall," he told The Associated Press outside the airport. "People were panicking, rushing out of the hall or looking for their relatives. There were people just lying in blood."

Yelena Zatserkovnaya, a Lufthansa official, said she was a similar distance away. "There was lots of blood, severed legs flying around."

Airport workers were using baggage trolleys to cart out the injured, she said.

Domodedovo Airport spokeswoman Yelena Galanova said 35 people were killed. The Emergencies Ministry said 31 people were killed, 51 hospitalized with injuries and 94 were given medical treatment. The discrepancy could not immediately be explained.

Eurocontrol, the European air traffic control agency in Brussels, said Domodedovo was briefly closed to air traffic immediately after the blast, but soon reopened.

Sergei Lavochkin, who was waiting in the arrivals hall for a friend to arrive from Cuba, said emergency teams carried bloodied people out of the terminal.

"I heard a loud bang, saw plastic panels falling down from the ceiling and heard people screaming. Then people started running away," Lavochkin told Rossiya 24 television.

Mark Green, a British Airways passenger who had just arrived, told BBC television he heard the huge explosion as he left the terminal.

"Literally, it shook you," he said. "As we were putting the bags in the car a lot of alarms ... were going off and people started flowing out of the terminal, some of whom were covered in blood."

"One gentleman had a pair of jeans on that was ripped and his thigh from his groin to his knee was covered in blood," he added.

Green said thousands of people were in the terminal at the time of the blast.

Hours after the blast, passengers arriving for their flights lined up outside waiting to pass through metal detectors that had been installed at all entrances. At least 20 ambulances and 10 fire trucks remained outside.

Built in 1964, Domodedovo is located 26 miles (42 kilometers) southeast of the center of Moscow and is the largest of the three major airports that serve the Russian capital, serving over 22 million people last year. It is generally regarded as Moscow's most up-to-date airport, but its security procedures have been called into question.

In 2004, two suicide bombers were able to board planes at Domodedovo by buying tickets illegally from airport personnel. The female bombers blew themselves up in mid-air, killing all 90 people aboard the two flights.

Some 77 airlines now offer regular flights to Domodedovo, serving 241 international and national routes, according to airport's website.

The airport insists that security is one of its top priorities, claiming on its website that its "cutting-edge operations technology guarantees the safety of passengers' and guests' lives."

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he was "deeply disturbed" by the reported terror attacks.

"I strongly condemn it," he said on Twitter. "NATO and Russia stand together in the fight against terrorism."

Google Seeks to Weaken Search Engine Ranking of “Content Farming” Websites

Google has announced that it is fixing flaws in its algorithm that allows search results to be spammed, while also planning to weaken the search-ability of websites referred to as ”content farms.” Matt Cutts, head of Google’s anti-spam team, writes:

As “pure webspam” has decreased over time, attention has shifted instead to “content farms,” which are sites with shallow or low-quality content. In 2010, we launched two major algorithmic changes focused on low-quality sites. Nonetheless, we hear the feedback from the web loud and clear: people are asking for even stronger action on content farms and sites that consist primarily of spammy or low-quality content. (my emphasis)

The only clear reference from Google about problems occurring from “content farms” in regards to spamming search results is from China: “Last year Google faced a rash of webspam on Chinese domains in our index. Some spammers were purchasing large amounts of cheap .cn domains and stuffing them with misspellings and porn phrases.” They claim this scheme led to “irrelevant” search results.
Yet, their goal seems to be to weaken what has been referred to as “news aggregating” websites as “one change that primarily affects sites that copy others’ content and sites with low levels of original content.” This clearly describes many sites that present alternative news. However, plenty of alternative news sites and blogs have original material which they freely share, in part or in full, purely to support one another in disseminating the truth. This is of key importance to spread information in the absence of government or foundation funding, as enjoyed by much of the mainstream media. It is also a counter to censorship, so that a free market of ideas can flourish where people can investigate facts for themselves, rather than have opinions dictated from a limited number of sources.
According to a recent cheerleading article by TechCrunch, content farms indeed include websites that post any duplicate content word-for-word, “Now, finally, it sounds like they’re going to do more to take on sites that just repurpose content from other sites (hopefully including the countless sites that repost TechCrunch articles verbatim).”
What’s odd is that everyone knows that original content already carries far more weight with Google algorithms than re-posted content. Additionally, backlinks from well-ranked relevant sites is also a huge factor in building a strong Google page rank, besides driving traffic to the source. Therefore, it would stand to reason that websites like TechCrunch should be overjoyed when other relevant sites post their content, as long as it is sourced with a hyperlink. Alexa ranks TechCrunch at 305 on the entire Internet, no doubt due to their 36,374 links that Alexa recognizes. Without allowing the sharing of their original content, this level of achievement would be impossible under the current Google algorithm.

For those who understand this concept, if they punish sites that re-post content such as news aggregators that link back to them, the source will surely lose traffic and overall ranking despite being heavy in original content. Which begs the question, what people have been asking for “stronger action against content farms?” Because gauging the rise in popularity of alternative media (i.e. news aggregators), it seems that Internet users themselves aren’t the ones complaining.
It is obviously the entrenched dinosaur media that despises having to play on a level field, especially as it pertains to truthful reporting and analysis. Former executive editor of the Washington Post, Leonard Downie Jr., addressed “old media vs. new media” in a September lecture where he excoriated so-called content farms as “parasites living off journalism produced by others.” He even claims re-posting of material, even if sourced, is “stealing” as reported by Politico:

‘The aggregators fill their websites with news, opinion, features, photographs and video that they continuously collect – some would say steal – from other national and local news sites, along with mostly unpaid postings by bloggers who settle for exposure in lieu of money,’ Downie said. ‘Though they purport to be a new form of journalism, these aggregators are primarily parasites living off journalism produced by others. They attract audiences by aggregating journalism about special interests and opinions reflecting a predictable point of view on the left or right of the political spectrum, along with titillating gossip and sex. Revealing photos of and stories about entertainment and celebrities account for much of the highly touted web traffic to the Huffington Post site, for example.’

Downie rightly states that these sites attract an audience seeking a certain point of view, but ignores the fact that mainstream outlets do the same. Some would argue that the real strength behind news aggregators is the ability to expose the establishment’s gross injustices and other inconvenient truths without all the “titillating” distractions. As the masses become more aware of establishment lies, they are flocking to alternative sites who cut through the BS and present a clear path to the truth.

Google’s algorithm changes seem to be yet another tool being used to direct the flow of information away from the alternative media to selected mainstream news sources. It compounds actions already taken by Google in their involvement in upending net neutrality in favor of mega-media machines; the attempt by Congress to crack down on copyright infringement by blacklisting domain names; and copyright extortionist lawyers suing over wording in links.
It’s obvious that the establishment will find a way to punish truth sites, either through technical penalization for re-posting material, reducing access speed, blogging taxes, lawsuits for copyright infringement, or by arbitrarily blacklisting the domain altogether.
At it’s core, this new Google algorithm seems to punish information sharing in favor of protectionist conglomerates with large writing staffs. We in the alternative media would do well to recognize that these actions being taken by the elite of the media world are just another sign of their weakened state. Now is the time for the alternative media to seek more writers and more cooperation.

Madonna And Prince, Friends Again?
That's Really Week is so accustomed to covering celebrity scandals, feuds, and all-around bad news that we were touched to learn that two of pop music's biggest names have mended their differences.
Madonna was a special guest at Prince's January 18 "Welcome 2 America" concert at Madison Square Garden. The "Like A Virgin" singer hardly went unnoticed.

According to Us magazine, the Purple One acknowledged Madonna during his show, making a joke about the cost of her concert tickets. "I know I'm expensive," he said.
In 2007 things weren't so peachy between the two. Prince dismissed Madge during a London gig, saying that he had more "hits than Madonna's got kids."
They dated in the '80s, and recorded "Love Song" for Madonna's 1989 album "Like A Prayer." But during the '90s, Madonna made it clear that she and the "Purple Rain" singer did not get along.
Madonna referred to him as a "little troll" and complained that he opted not to eat during a dinner date. "He was just sipping tea, very daintily," according to Us.
We're happy that the queen of pop can cross a name off of her list of nemeses. Maybe she and new CNN personality Piers Morgan will also make amends. Last week, Morgan revealed to Access Hollywood why he and the Material Girl aren't cordial.
Morgan alleges that a lie was the most significant in a series of crimes Madonna committed against him. "You know the worst thing Madonna did to me?" Morgan asked Access Hollywood's Billy Bush. "Madonna's publicist once said to me, 'Listen to me, Madonna is not pregnant,' when I was running a newspaper. And I said, ‘\'Are you sure? She said, 'Listen to me, Piers. Madonna is not pregnant.'" "The next day, they announced [the news] on a rival newspaper's website," Piers added.
If Morgan's account is true, we would agree that being scooped by a competing publication is never good. But That's Really Week would like to advise Mr. Morgan in the future to not hate the player, but to hate the game. We were hoping there was some real dirt behind this beef.
In related news, Morgan, a former "America's Got Talent" judge, should be happy for the folks at AGT's sister show "American Idol," which opened a new season this week to positive reviews from critics and fans. Britney Spears' new single "Hold It Against Me," came in at No. 1. And if that wasn't enough good news, Elton John and David Furnish celebrated the arrival of their son Zach. Unfortunately, the week also included the sad news of the loss of famed song publisher Don Kirshner.

Social networking under fresh attack as tide of cyber-scepticism sweeps US
The way in which people frantically communicate online via Twitter, Facebook and instant messaging can be seen as a form of modern madness, according to a leading American sociologist.

"A behaviour that has become typical may still express the problems that once caused us to see it as pathological," MIT professor Sherry Turkle writes in her new book, Alone Together, which is leading an attack on the information age.

Turkle's book, published in the UK next month, has caused a sensation in America, which is usually more obsessed with the merits of social networking. She appeared last week on Stephen Colbert's late-night comedy show, The Colbert Report. When Turkle said she had been at funerals where people checked their iPhones, Colbert quipped: "We all say goodbye in our own way."

Turkle's thesis is simple: technology is threatening to dominate our lives and make us less human. Under the illusion of allowing us to communicate better, it is actually isolating us from real human interactions in a cyber-reality that is a poor imitation of the real world.

But Turkle's book is far from the only work of its kind. An intellectual backlash in America is calling for a rejection of some of the values and methods of modern communications. "It is a huge backlash. The different kinds of communication that people are using have become something that scares people," said Professor William Kist, an education expert at Kent State University, Ohio.

The list of attacks on social media is a long one and comes from all corners of academia and popular culture. A recent bestseller in the US, The Shallows by Nicholas Carr, suggested that use of the internet was altering the way we think to make us less capable of digesting large and complex amounts of information, such as books and magazine articles. The book was based on an essay that Carr wrote in the Atlantic magazine. It was just as emphatic and was headlined: Is Google Making Us Stupid?

Another strand of thought in the field of cyber-scepticism is found in The Net Delusion, by Evgeny Morozov. He argues that social media has bred a generation of "slacktivists". It has made people lazy and enshrined the illusion that clicking a mouse is a form of activism equal to real world donations of money and time.

Other books include The Dumbest Generation by Emory University professor Mark Bauerlein – in which he claims "the intellectual future of the US looks dim"– and We Have Met the Enemy by Daniel Akst, which describes the problems of self-control in the modern world, of which the proliferation of communication tools is a key component.

The backlash has crossed the Atlantic. In Cyburbia, published in Britain last year, James Harkin surveyed the modern technological world and found some dangerous possibilities. While Harkin was no pure cyber-sceptic, he found many reasons to be worried as well as pleased about the new technological era. Elsewhere, hit film The Social Network has been seen as a thinly veiled attack on the social media generation, suggesting that Facebook was created by people who failed to fit in with the real world.

Turkle's book, however, has sparked the most debate so far. It is a cri de coeur for putting down the BlackBerry, ignoring Facebook and shunning Twitter. "We have invented inspiring and enhancing technologies, yet we have allowed them to diminish us," she writes.

Fellow critics point to numerous incidents to back up their argument. Recently, media coverage of the death in Brighton of Simone Back focused on a suicide note she had posted on Facebook that was seen by many of her 1,048 "friends" on the site. Yet none called for help – instead they traded insults with each other on her Facebook wall.

Turkle's book has also hit home because her previous works, The Second Self and Life on the Screen, seemed more open to the technological world. "Alone Together reads as if it were written by Turkle's evil Luddite twin," joked Kist.

But even the backlash now has a backlash, with many leaping to the defence of social media. They point out that emails, Twitter and Facebook have led to more communication, not less – especially for people who may have trouble meeting in the real world because of great distance or social difference.

Defenders say theirs is just a different form of communication that people might have trouble getting used to. "When you go into a coffee shop and everyone is silent on their laptop, I understand what she is saying about not talking to one another," Kist said. "But it is still communicating. I disagree with her. I don't see it as so black and white."

Some experts believe the debate is so fierce because social networking is a new field that has yet to develop rules and etiquette that everyone can respect and that is why incidents such as Simone Back's death appear so shocking. "Let's face it, I see no sign of anyone unplugging," said Kist. "But, perhaps, we need to involve a 'netiquette' to deal with it all."

He also pointed out that the "real world" that many social media critics hark back to never really existed. Before everyone travelled on the bus or train with their heads buried in an iPad or a smart phone, they usually just travelled in silence. "We did not see people spontaneously talking to strangers. They were just keeping to themselves," Kist said.

Apple is going to be using a new type of screw for the iPhone 4. It’s named the pentalobe, a round-edged five level star shaped pentalobe screwhead. It’s similar to a Torx, except that the points have a rounder shape, and it has five points instead of six. Apple’s service manuals refer to them as “Pentalobular” screws, which is a descriptive enough term. Pentalobe not a standard Torx, and there are no readily available screwdrivers that can remove it.

This isn’t the first time apple used this type of screw it first appeared in the mid-2009 MacBook Pro to prevent you from replacing the battery and Apple is using a similar screw on the outer case of the current MacBook Air.

Roger Ebert, movie critic, cancer survivor and undeniable king of the Twitter bon mot, publically debuted his new prosthetic jaw on a blog post Facebook blocked as "abusive content."

Ebert, who returns to TV Friday with the premiere of his PBS show, "Ebert Presents at the Movies," lost his jaw in 2006 during his battle with thyroid cancer. "After surgery, I studiously avoided looking at myself in a mirror," Ebert writes in the blog post, though he has been candid about his radically changed appearance, most famously appearing last year on the cover of Esquire magazine.

Titled "Leading with my chin," the Jan. 19 blog post details Ebert’s two–year journey with David J. Reisberg, a specialist in facial reconstruction, in the development of the jaw prosthetic. The post includes images, though none of a medically graphic nature.

In a note introducing the blog post, as well as its absence, Ebert writes on his Facebook page:

According to Facebook’s Help section, the social network identifies the following types of behavior as abusive:

• Feature overuse: There are limits to restrict the rate at which you can use features on the site. Overusing features is not allowed because it may make other people feel annoyed or unsafe.
• Unwanted contact: Our systems detect when friend requests you send to others are being ignored at a high rate and volume. Using Facebook to contact many people you don't know is not allowed because it may make them feel threatened, harassed, or unsafe.

Facebook is looking into the matter, according to a spokesperson for the social networking site who responded to Technolog via e-mail. Attempts to contact Ebert are unsuccessful at the time of this post, which will be updated as information unfolds.

South Korea Navy 'kills Somali pirates, saves crew'

South Korean navy commandos on Friday stormed a ship hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean, rescuing all the 21 crew and killing eight pirates, military officials said.

The SEAL special forces boarded the South Korean ship before dawn, freeing all the hostages and killing the pirates in cabin-to-cabin battles, they said. Five other pirates were captured.

"This operation demonstrated our government's strong will that we won't tolerate illegal activities by pirates any more," Lieutenant-General Lee Sung-Ho of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told a news briefing.

The South Korean skipper of the chemical freighter suffered a gunshot wound to his stomach during the raid but his condition is not life-threatening, the military said. No commandos were hurt.

The rescue about 1,300 kilometres (800 miles) off northeast Somalia was seen as a major morale boost for the South's military. It has faced strong domestic criticism for a perceived weak response to North Korea's shelling of a border island last November.

President Lee Myung-Bak, who authorised the operation, said the military carried out the raid perfectly under difficult circumstances.

"We will not tolerate any activities that threaten the safety and lives of our people," he said.

The pirates seized the 11,500-ton ship and 21 crew members -- eight South Koreans, two Indonesians and 11 from Myanmar -- on January 15 in the Arabian Sea when it was en route to Sri Lanka from the United Arab Emirates.

Seoul ordered a destroyer on patrol in the Gulf of Aden to give chase and President Lee ordered "all possible measures" to save the crew.

General Lee said the commandos moved in after receiving information that the "mother ship" for the pirates was leaving a Somali port.

"Since we thought we could be in an extremely difficult situation if the pirates joined forces, we chose today to carry out the operation."

Lee praised the freighter's 57-year-old skipper Suk Hae-Kyun for his prudence. "Pirates sought to take the vessel to the Somalian coast fast but the skipper helped us earn time by manoeuvring the vessel in a serpentine manner."

To distract the pirates' attention, the destroyer fired warning shots and manoeuvred close to the hijacked vessel. A Lynx helicopter provided covering fire as the commandos stormed the ship.

The Koreans were assisted by a US carrier which also provided a helicopter to transfer the wounded Korean skipper.

"It was breathtaking news," said Suk Hyun-Wook, son of the 58-year-old skipper, describing his response to reports of the raid.

Kim Doo-Chan, 61, was also among the rescued crew. "I feel so relieved," his 28-year-old son Dong-Min told Yonhap news agency. "I'm ecstatic."

The military said Friday's rescue followed a brief gunbattle Tuesday, when the destroyer encountered pirates who had apparently left the South Korean freighter to try to seize a nearby Mongolian vessel.

The South Korean commandos aboard a speedboat and a Lynx helicopter were dispatched to rescue the Mongolian ship.

Tuesday's firefight left several pirates missing and believed killed, although their bodies have not been found, a JCS spokesmen said. Three commandos were slightly hurt.

Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan broke the news at a New Year's reception Friday for the heads of foreign diplomatic missions in Seoul, bringing applause and cheers from the ambassadors, a foreign ministry official said.

The captured five pirates could be brought to South Korea or third countries for punishment, he said.

The hijacking came two months after a supertanker belonging to the same company, Samho Shipping, was released after being held for seven months.

The 300,000-tonne Samho Dream and its 24 crew were freed only after the pirates were paid a ransom reported as a record $9 million.

Piracy has surged off lawless Somalia in recent years, and international warships patrol the area in a bid to clamp down on the problem. Pirates are currently holding 29 vessels and about 700 hostages.

In 2008 the French military became the first to respond militarily to piracy in the region, when marines raided the yacht Carre d'As and freed two hostages being held by seven Somali pirates. One pirate was killed and the other six captured.

In one of the most controversial rescues, Russian marines freed 23 crew barricaded on board a Russian tanker, the Moscow University. The pirates were later found dead and adrift in a small boat.

Google launch Google Offers, the search giant’s Groupon competitor

Google is preparing to launch Google Offers, the search giant’s Groupon competitor, Mashable (Mashable) has learned. We have the documents to prove it.

One of our sources has sent us a confidential fact sheet straight from the Googleplex about the company’s new group buying service. “Google Offers is a new product to help potential customers and clientele find great deals in their area through a daily email,” the fact sheet says.

Google Offers looks and operates much like Groupon or LivingSocial. Users receive an e-mail with a local deal-of-the-day. They then have the opportunity to buy that deal within a specific time limit (we assume 24 hours). Once enough people have made the purchase, the Google Offer is triggered and users get that all-too-familiar $10 for $20 deal for that Indian restaurant you’ve never tried.

From what we can tell, Google Offers will be powered by Google Checkout. It also includes Facebook (Facebook), Twitter (Twitter), Google Reader (Google Reader), Google Buzz (Google Buzz) and e-mail sharing options.

Google (Google) is actively reaching out to businesses now to get them on board with Offers. It even apparently has a writing team in place to craft the write-up for offers.

Google famously tried to buy Groupon for $6 billion just a few months ago in order to bolster its local advertising business. Groupon rejected the offer though and is instead preparing for a $15 billion IPO.

The search giant clearly isn’t giving this market up without a fight, though. With its vast reach, huge resources and brand recognition, it could prove to be a powerful player in the space. We’re going to be watching these developments closely. We’ve reached out to Google for comment.

Update: Google has responded to our inquiry and sent us the following statement:

“Google is communicating with small businesses to enlist their support and participation in a test of a pre-paid offers/vouchers program. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort at Google to make new products, such as the recent Offer Ads beta, that connect businesses with customers in new ways. We do not have more details to share at this time, but will keep you posted.”

Google essentially confirms Google Offers is real. It looks like Google Offers is in the testing phases, though.

Update 2: We’ve also learned that Google will pay out 80% of a business’ revenue share three days after its deal runs. Google will hold the remaining 20% for 60 days to cover refunds before sending the rest.

Now that we know that most of you liked Steven Tyler on last night's new and improved American Idol, how did it play out in the ratings?

Idol's 10th season opener, minus Simon Cowell, saw a decline of 13% from the last year's premiere on Jan. 12, 2010 (29.9 million), reports USA TODAY's Gary Levin. And last night's debut saw an 18% drop in adults 18-49, vs. last year's opening.

However, it is Idol's top-rated episode since Feb. 9, 2010 and is up 8% in viewers and up 18% in demos over May's 9th-season finale (24.2 million and 8.2/24).

By the way, Paula Abdul's Live to Dance, which went up against Idol in the 8 p.m. hour, got clobbered by her old show. She pulled in 5.3 million viewers.

Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle, the slinky and savage outlaw who is known as Catwoman, in next year’s Christopher Nolan film “The Dark Knight Rises,” according to a press release from Warner Bros.

Tom Hardy, already announced as a cast member, will play Bane, the chemically created brute who first appeared in the comics in 1993 — making him a far “younger” villain for Nolan’s Batman mega-franchise, which has most prominently featured the Joker (who first appeared in 1940) , Two-Face (1942), Ras Al-Ghul (1971) and the Scarecrow (1941).

Catwoman — then just called “The Cat” – first appeared in 1940 as the creation of Bob Kane and Bill Finger, and she has brought leather-clad sexual tension to the Batman adventures both on the page and beyond; she was portrayed by Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt and Lee Meriwether on the 1960s television series starring Adam West as the caped crusader, and Michelle Pfeiffer memorably cracked the whip in the role opposite of the masked Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s 1992 film “Batman Returns.” In 2004, Halle Berry starred in the character’s own solo film, “Catwoman,” but the film became an infamous flop and was jeered by comic-book fans after director Pitof jettisoned years of comic-book lore and character touchstones.

Nolan, in the Warner press release, said: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.” Of Hardy, who worked with Nolan on “Inception,” the director said: “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his wife and longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” hits theaters on July 20, 2012.

American Idol Episode 1 Recap: Steven Tyler Steals And Maybe Saves The Show
"Forget what you know...for the best is yet to come," declared the bold lettering at the start of the "American Idol" Season 10 premiere. Yep, "forget" is right. You know how "Dallas" basically negated an entire season by writing it off as Pam's year-long bad dream? Well, I was kind of hoping that "American Idol" would do the same this week--you know, that it'd kick off the season with a benevolently beaming Bobby Ewing in the shower, reassuring jaded viewers that Season 9 never really happened. Either that, or Ryan Seacrest would open the show with a flourish of a "Men In Black"-style memory-erasing pen, thus obliterating troubling recollections of last year's Worst Season Ever from even the most remote recesses of viewers'
cerebellums.
OK, that didn't happen. But as newly appointed and lavishly hyped judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler--or J.Lo and S.Ty, as I affectionately call them--took their seats at the judges' table for the first time Wednesday evening, it was most definitely a slate-cleaning TV moment. This would indeed be a new "Idol." But would it be an improved "Idol"? Well, anything would be an improvement upon Season 9, really...but as two superstars searching for, well, the next superstar, J.Lo and S.Ty still faced a supersized task, working against a backdrop of lowered expectations, raised doubts, and the glaring absence of the flat-topped icon who'd been at the (cold, black) heart of the show for nine years, Simon Cowell.
So, how did they do? Well, Steven had me at "hello"--or more specifically, he had me the first time he let a curse word slip during the show's cold open. And the second time. And the third. And that was just, like, the first 10 minutes. There were more bleeps going on than in an episode of "The Osbournes." It sounded like Morse code up in there. I always believed this lady-looking dude would be 24-karat TV gold (seriously, how did it take him this long to go the reality route?), and now that I've seen him deliver, I officially predict that Kid Rock, Joe Perry, and any other anti-"Idol" Tyler haters will soon be swallowing their words. I'm sure even Simon would be impressed with a Tyler zinger like "Did you eat a lot of paint-chips as child?"
Really, if Steven can keep up his rock 'n' roll circus act--which so far involves liberal use of bizarre mixed metaphors; plenty of flirting, even with 16-year-olds, that makes Simon's interaction with Bikini Girl look positively chaste; and randomly accompanying contestants with shrill Aerosmithian backup vocals--"American Idol" will do for him what VH1 and MTV did for his fellow rockers Bret Michaels and Ozzy Osbourne. He'll have a whole new career on his hands. Forget who wins this year: The star of "American Idol" Season 10 will be Steven Tyler.
But what about J.Lo? Well, she declared right off the bat that she's "not in the business of crushing people's spirits." Boo! We all know this woman has a big diva rep. So I for one didn't want to see her nicey-nice good-cop act, watching her feign agony over having to reject contestants as she cried out, "Why did I sign up for this?" But I warmed to Jennifer as the episode went on. She exhibited genuine chemistry with the judges (of course she related well to Steven--those two look very eerily alike, if you squint); she clearly served as a role model for the many fawning, blubbering contestants who claimed she was the entire reason they got into music; and by the show's end, she'd let a little bit of her brittle wickedness show through. So she did all right, dawg. After a series of career stumbles (including a literal one at the American Music Awards), not to mention a poorly received new single this week, "Idol" is a good move for Jennifer, I think. Like Steven, she too may have a new career ahead of her, no matter how many box-office bombs she drops or record labels she gets dropped from.
I admit that, much like a dog waiting sad-eyed by the door for his master to return from vacation, at first I sat forlornly by my TV set pining for Simon, my eyes scouring the screen for any sign of a bottle-brush haircut or too-tight T-shirt, my ears perked up in hopes of hearing just the slightest hint of a familiar British brogue. But Steven was entertaining enough to make me barely miss Cowell, and then I realized that "Idol" isn't supposed to about the judges--not Steven, not Jennifer, not even Simon. (And certainly not Randy.) It's about the contestants. And with the highest audition turnout in the series' history this season (120,000), I deeply desired to believe producer Nigel Lythgoe's repeated emphatic assertions that Season 10 would be bursting with would-be Clarksons, Underwoods, Hudsons, and Lamberts, true idols in every sense of the word. So I finally forced my attention away from J.Lo and S.Ty and their unnervingly identical visages, and instead focused on this evening's crop of New York/New Jersey hopefuls--all the while trying to remain hopeful myself.
There was a notable lack of wackjob auditions, an obvious ploy to prove Nigel's proud claims about this year's cavernous talent pool. I assumed I'd miss all the prospective William Hungs and Larry Platts a lot more than I actually did. Instead, I was swept up in Steven's whooping, catcalling excitement, and I got excited myself over a couple cool contenders. But still, there were enough rejects to inject a little humor into the episode--during those rare moments when S.Ty or the questionable fashion choices of New Jersey's orange-tanned contenders weren't doing so, that is. Belching, Taylor Hicks-dancing Michael Perotto, aka the "paint-chips" guy, was worth a giggle or two, but it was Japanese Michael Jackson impersonator Yoji Pop, with his vivacious performance of Miley Cyrus's "Party In the USA," that stole the show. With his flailing MJ dance moves (his "Smooth Criminal" lean actually impressed J.Lo) and Elvis-meets-Duran Duran pompadour, Yoji was a one-man party in the USA, Japan, or any other country for that matter.
Lamentably, Yoji didn't make it through. But here are the successful auditioners who caught my ear and eye this week:
Caleb Hawley - My favorite male singer of the episode, this soulful rocker had Steven drumming on his desk and hollering up a storm. Caleb's belty, bluesy take on Eva Cassidy's "Hallelujah" (not the overdone Leonard Cohen song--that came later) showed a lot of potential, and really, Caleb is only one David Cook-esque makeover away from total heartthrob hotness. Summon in the stylists and watch the girlies swoon in no time, I predict.
Ashley Sullivan - During her bio package, this goofy girl openly declared her love for Britney Spears. And to loosely quote Britters, this girl's got your crazy. A nutcase of Tatiana Del Toro-esque proportions with a brash Broadway persona and a mission to be the "first show tunes pop star," Ashley's manically bug-eyed, neck-vein-throbbing performance from "Thoroughly Modern Millie" was borderline-terrifying...but man, it was darn entertaining. Two crazies like S.Ty and A.Sull on the same TV screen excites me to no end. I doubt she'll make it past her first Hollywood Week meltdown, but I look forward to drama while it lasts. I'm also pretty sure Vote For The Worst has already picked this chick to be their Season 10 posterchild. With a catchphrase like "Mainstream pop needs to get with Liza Minnelli," how could they not?
Devyn Rush - Simon Cowell was never much of a fan of singing waitresses, but if he'd stuck around this season, this woman would have served him some humble pie on a plate. Devyn's scatty, sassy performance of "God Bless The Child" reminded me a bit of Megan Joy's promising early audition from Season 8, and it whetted all the judges' appetites for more. "That was delicious," purred Steven. Yes, Devyn also needs a makeover ("Someone needs to take her shopping," advised Steven), but her voice was one of the tastiest of the episode. I'm hungry to hear more.
Travis Orlando - A nice 16-year-old Bronx boy who spent much of his childhood living in shelters when his father's illness rendered his family homeless, Travis is the kind of contestant people root for. And I do think this boy with the Bruno Mars-ish good looks and honey-covered vocal cords is one to watch. It seems his years of hard living have lent him a mature, soulful voice that belies his age, and yet during his audition he demonstrated a plucky spirit, a youthful optimism not crushed by his tough times. I personally preferred his rendition of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" over his second song, the done-to-death "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, but regardless of what this guy sings, I've got a feeling America will eat it up.
Rachel Zevita - A young soprano who made it through in Season 6 before being cut on the first day of Hollywood Week, little Rachel is all grown up now. She was a four-eyed nerd five years ago, but this girl cleans up nice, and she's blossomed, swan-like, into quite a stunner. But has her voice evolved too? Well, Jennifer actually remembered Rachel's first appearance on the show, and while she was underwhelmed by Rachel's 2011 audition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"--aka The Most Oversung Song In "Idol" History, a song even Cohen himself doesn't want to hear anymore--she put Rachel through based on her earlier promise. Personally, I'm glad Rachel got another chance, and hope she stays in Hollywood a little longer this time.
Briell Von Hugel - A lovely young lass inspired by her doo-wop dad, this girl has "Idol" written all over her. Besides delivering a sweetly stirring performance of "Endless Love" and exhibiting what seems to be a genuinely pleasant personality, she has the made-for-TV sob story (her singing father got throat cancer, but pulled through based on his desire to one day see his daughter compete on "Idol") that viewers will just adore. "I beat cancer, and she's going through to Hollywood," Daddy Von Hugel declared proudly. Aw.
Robbie Rosen - Steven said this 16-year-old kid had the best voice in New Jersey after hearing him warble the Beatles' "Yesterday." That might be overstating things, but with his heartstring-tugging sob story (he was wheelchair-bound as a child), all-American-boy looks, butter-smooth boy-band voice, and what Simon used to call "likeability factor," he seems certain to go far.
Melinda Ademi - Yes, yet another sob story. Luckily, so far this season's sad-sack contestants have the voices to ensure they won't have to coast by on sympathy votes. This girl--like Briell, Travis, and Robbie--can also sing. I was rooting for this Kosovo refugee all throughout her emotional bio piece, cheering on her pursuit of the ultimate American dream, and thankfully her performance of Alicia Keys's "If I Ain't Got You" was the payoff. She didn't disappoint me.
Tiffany Rios - The obvious Snooki of this competition, this loud and proud, hairsprayed Puerto Rican bombshell was eager to show off her, um, assets to the judges. She likened her "non-stick-figure" booty to her idol J.Lo's, and boldly tore open her shirt in the middle of her self-penned novelty song to reveal a star-spangled bikini top. ("Why do you have jujubes on your ooh-ooh-bees?" queried a confused but clearly amused Steven.) Fortunately, Tiffany buttoned up and dropped the sexy shtick for her second song, Celine Dion's "Glory Of Love," and proved she actually can sing. I just hope that in Hollywood Week's group challenge, this crazy lady is in the same ensemble with Ashley Sullivan. And that they wear matching star-studded bikini tops. That'd be crazy-awesome.
Victoria Huggins - This painfully precious 16-year-old cutie definitely lived up to her cuddly surname. A pageanty, princessy Pollyanna with a Minnie-Mouse-on-helium speaking voice, Victoria seriously annoyed me...until she sang "Midnight Train To Georgia" with an unexpected amount of throatiness and maturity. Dang! I just hope Steven remembers that Victoria really is only sweet 16 and possibly never been kissed. His flirting with Vicky was kind of...icky.
And so, there you have it. I'll wait until "Idol" has a finalized top 10 before I decide whether or not it can survive all this season's shakeups...but so far, I'm surprisingly encouraged, and I can't wait to see what sort of talent turns up Thursday in audition stop #2, New Orleans.

WordPress will remain in demand followed by Textpattern as a CMS.
So what will be website design trends in this 2011.
Minimalistic Website Design

Although web design is minimalist but it would be inserted with HTML5 or CSS3 as a “sweetener”. There wll be more space in the web layout, and colors used are not too many. Simplicity will be more dominating and I am sure you will be more tired make scrolling a web page compared to the last year 2010.

Typography Design

Typography will be more used by the web designer. Most will be applied to personal blogs or personal portfolios. Any combination of letters will not die but will be combined in a more creative again. Fonts that often used is usually standard like Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, tahoma, but appears with more combination and experimental composition.
Transparant Layout Website Design

If you do not use the software then CSS3 and jQuery would play this function. Transparent effect will be more widely applied in the login box, 2 boxes or crosses a boundary line.
Magazine Style

Actually this is the trend in 2010 but is still favored by bloggers because of the growth of blogs that “fat” even greater. Blog with content that many would not want to force the owner to use the layout that also bigsize but looks clean

Tucson shooting victim detained at taping of TV special

A Tucson mass shooting victim was taken into custody Saturday after yelling "you're dead" at a Tea Party spokesman during the taping of an ABC-TV town hall event hosted by Christianne Amanpour.

The Pima County Sheriff's Office said J. Eric Fuller, 63, was involuntarily committed to an undisclosed medical facility, NBC News reported. The Associated Press said he was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

He faces charges of threats and intimidation and disorderly conduct, according to Tucson TV station KGUN.

The gathering for "After the Tragedy: An American Conversation Continued," to be shown as a special edition of "This Week" Sunday, included witnesses, first responders, victims and heroes of the Jan. 8 mass shooting that killed six and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz.

Local officials and others also packed St. Odilia's Catholic Church in northwest Tucson, where the show was taped.

KGUN reported that Fuller took exception to comments by Republican state Rep. Terri Proud and Tucson Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries.

Fuller was in the front row and apparently became upset when Humphries suggested that any conversations about gun control should be delayed until all the dead were buried, KGUN reported.

Fuller took a picture of Humphries and shouted, “You’re dead.”

Some media reports said Fuller kept booing and making other remarks before deputies escorted him from the church.

Also at the church were Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup, Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., and former Rep. Jim Kolbe.

If Humphries decides not to press charges, the charges will be dropped, Pima Deputy Jason Ogan told Phoenix station KNXV.

The hospital will determine when he will be released, Ogan said.

Fuller reportedly felt a bullet hit his knee Jan. 8, but didn't know he had also been struck in the back. The Arizona Daily Star reported, Fuller, a naval air veteran, drove himself to Northwest Hospital after being shot. He was later taken to University Medical Center where he was released two days later.

Sgt. Carlton Cook at the West Los Angeles Community Police Station says the "Easy Rider" actor called 911 on Wednesday after he spotted a car parked on the side of Sunset Boulevard. Cook says the 70-year-old Fonda is absolutely not a suspect but did not have any more details.

The call was first reported by TMZ, which says Fonda got out of his car and found the man slumped over in the front seat.

Facebook's agreed to display Amber Alerts - notifications of missing children - following a deal with the National Center for the Missing and Exploited Children and the Department of Justice.

It's a good PR move for the company, which has consistently refused to add a 'panic button' to its pages to allow people to report suspected grooming by pedophiles.

All it means, in fact, is that users can choose to friend one of the 53 Amber Alert pages that are being set up - one for each state, plus Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia. Alert bulletins for their state will then appear in their news feed, and they'll be able to share them with friends.

“Everyone at Facebook feels a responsibility to help protect children and, as a former federal prosecutor and a father of two, I am particularly proud that we are now part of the AMBER Alert program,” said Chris Sonderby, Facebook lead security and investigations counsel.

“Our hearts go out to the families of the missing and our gratitude goes to the officers, volunteers, and other AMBER Alert partners who work tirelessly to bring them home. We are hopeful that today’s announcement offers these dedicated officials another useful tool to find and safely recover abducted children.”

An estimated 800,000 children are reported missing every year, and the aim of the Amber Alert program is to instantly get help in searching for a missing child.The main method used is the Emergency Alert System (EAS), the broadcast system used for weather emergencies and other public emergencies.

Ted Williams, the homeless "golden voice" internet sensation, voluntarily checked into substance abuse rehab for his alcohol and drug dependency after admitting on a television show that he was still drinking, a spokeswoman for "The Dr. Phil Show" said Wednesday.

Williams, 53, has been on a whirlwind spiral of publicity since a Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reporter videotaped him panhandling on a roadside. The video quickly went viral on the internet, and he was offered several announcing jobs, including a contract with Kraft Foods.
He said in several broadcast interviews in the past week he has been sober for the past two years after years of addiction, a problem that separated him from his family and left him homeless for years.
The decision to seek professional help came after "a lengthy one-on-one conversation with Dr. Phil," show spokeswoman Stacey Luchs said in a written statement, referring to show host Phil McGraw.
Show officials did not disclose which facility Williams had entered for treatment.
Dr. Howard Samuels, the CEO of The Hills Treatment Center in Los Angeles, said he was not surprised to learn Williams was still drinking, given that the experienced "such an extreme from having nothing to having money and fame in such a short period of time."
"The hardest thing for an alcoholic is to have success," Samuels said. "Because the alcoholic, on a very deep level, has a very difficult time with success."
Williams, who traveled to Los Angeles with his family, has taped three interviews with "The Dr. Phil Show," the program statement said.
"The decision was made due in part to Williams' strange behavior over the past several days, which culminated in a physical altercation with one of his daughters at a Hollywood hotel," the statement said. "He was briefly detained by police and later released."
Williams' third appearance with Dr. Phil, taped after his decision to enter rehab, will air Thursday, the statement said. His ex-wife, Patricia, and five family members will also appear on Thursday's episode "to share their version of the incident and why they feel Williams is ill-equipped to handle his sudden fame," it said.

Looming over a barren industrial neighborhood locals call skid row, stands Gertrude Zachary's castle.

Rising like a fortress between a rescue mission and the railroad tracks, the estate is encircled by a wall 10 feet high. Within is a pool, courtyard garden, guest home and a 8,500-square-foot main home with four turrets each rising 50 feet into the air.

The estate is a showcase for Ms. Zachary's collection of religious art, stained glass windows and antique arched doors purchased in Europe and elsewhere. The arched brick entryway echoes the transept of a Gothic church. On the first floor, several reception rooms flow together, under a 12-foot ceiling. An iron banister staircase leads to the second floor, with its two bedrooms and a playroom for Ms. Zachary's grandchildren. An adjacent bathroom is home to a large, wooden unicorn.

On the walls, Ms. Zachary has hung modern paintings alongside quirky framed collections, such as gun shell casings, sequined vintage purses and miniature crowns that once adorned religious statues. She has a particular affection for soft, glittering lights: She's hung 210 chandeliers, many of them hand-blown in Murano, Italy. To clean them takes four days of work on the part of the estate's caretaker.

Ms. Zachary's home, across from a shuttered restaurant and abutting the parking lot of a raucous bar, is the only apparent residence in the desolate neighborhood. Lush blue-green velvet curtains and centuries-old door and window frames overlook parking lots, an overpass and a billboard advertising Ms. Zachary's antique and jewelry business. Ms. Zachary's daughter, Erica Hatchell, who lives in a more affluent area, said her mother couldn't be dissuaded from building here. "Nobody else would have made that decision," she said.

"I like downtown," said Ms. Zachary, 73, noting that cities such as Paris and New York have homes in industrial areas. Married and divorced three times, she lives in her estate with her Shih Tzu named Zipper.

There's no shortage of color to Ms. Zachary's life. Her father, Julius E. Witzky, was the chief engineer at Mercedes-Benz. His family said he helped design the U-boat and the Hindenburg, the doomed airship. She received a jewelry manufacturing plant in a divorce settlement from her third husband in the mid-1970s, and her fortune grew as she expanded the business and made well-timed real estate investments.

In 2000, Ms. Zachary bought a parking lot adjacent to her downtown antiques store for $250,000-a fraction of the price of a similar piece of land in the city's more desirable residential neighborhoods. It also boasted a 360-degree view of the Rio Grande valley and was a quick drive to her three nearby stores and a manufacturing plant. Because the 0.589-acre lot was downtown, Ms. Zachary's plans-her home was inspired by one in Paris-won easy approval from the city, which makes new home construction difficult in most areas because of its stringent rules to protect historic neighborhoods.

When construction began in 2006, few believed it would become a house. Some thought it looked like a concrete castle; one wondered if it might be a new Scientology building. But the result, completed in 2008, drew praise from architects and builders alike. While Ms. Zachary said she spent $2.1 million to build the mansion, a knowledgeable local expert estimated it cost perhaps double that amount. The assessed value of the home and land is $1.3 million.

With her eye always on business, Ms. Zachary occasionally opens up her home for local fund-raisers, "People see how beautiful the chandeliers are and we usually end up selling a couple chandeliers the next day," she said. Indeed, some of the furnishings in the home still have tags on them.

But some items she'll never sell, such as the intricate wood-panel walls and cornices, purchased from a local men's furnishings store that went out of business. Ms. Zachary's builder fit the dark ash panels to one of the walls of the home's large reception space.

Likewise, she purchased etched glass from Paris and soaring arched doors from an estate in Buenos Aires, and designed her home to fit them. After 10 years of collecting in Europe, she owns a wardrobe said to be from a Parisian brothel, where the girls use to hide, as well as a cradle said to have been made for Napoleon III's infant son, which now sits decoratively in the second floor bedroom of her guest house.

Does she truly believe it belonged to him? "It's a nice story," she said, her brown eyes looking amused.

Ms. Zachary has made a few unusual decisions, such as installing in her garage some arched stained glass panels sold from a de-sanctified church in Pittsburgh. She said she's not sure why she made that decision, but her daughter Erica explained that at night, when the garage lights are on, the windows are a beautiful way to welcome her home.

For her wardrobe, Ms. Zachary has devoted one clothes closet to dark colors and the other to light. "Anything to be unique," laughed Erica

Nelson was the last remaining member of the Nelsons TV family, which included actor/bandleader Ozzie, his singer wife, Harriet Hilliard and his teen idol brother Rick. The show originated on radio in 1952 as "Here Come the Nelsons," then ran for 320 episodes on TV from 1952 to 1966 as "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" with some of the story lines taken from the stars' own lives. Singer Gunnar Nelson, a son of Rick Nelson, issued a statement Wednesday, saying his uncle's death was "a great loss to the Nelson family."

Ted Williams, the formerly homeless man who became a viral sensation for his “golden voice,” was detained with a daughter Monday night after police responded to a disturbance at a Los Angeles hotel, according to the Hollywood Reporter and Access Hollywood.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to TODAYshow.com that two people were detained around 9 p.m. PT because of an alleged "yelling altercation."

Facebook Shutting Down is Just a Rumor
It's not clear how it started, but a ridiculous rumor that Facebook is shutting down is spreading fast on social networks.

The hot rumor -- evidenced by Google Trends and gaining traction on Twitter -- says that on March 15, 2011, Facebook will be closing down. Not taking a day off, not undergoing maintenance, but ending entirely.

The rumor has led to such frantic tweets as, "Facebook will be shutting down on March 2011? I hope not!" (@MissAyl) and "So the rumor is Facebook is shutting down....please don't jump to twitter & ruin my social networking experience" (@jjelksboss).

Facebook users are also concerned. Says one: "Facebook is shutting down on March 15, 2011 for good D: Is there any way we can stop this!?!?" And a group has already started to stop Facebook from shutting down.

Ironically, Yahoo announced last month that its "Yahoo Video" will be closing down on the date in question, March 15, 2011, and videos can be seen for the last time on March 14. But that hardly means it's taking the rest of the Internet down with it.

Just a day ago, an opinion piece published on CNN said that the recent Goldman Sachs investment was the "beginning of the end" for Facebook. That post went viral with more than 5,000 Facebook "likes" and could be partially to blame for the ensuing panic.

Whatever the reason for this rumor, it's safe to say that as a site with more than 500 million users and a $500 millon investment from Goldman Sachs recently, Facebook won't be shutting down anytime soon.

Facebook Will End On March 15th
Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful.

“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.

“After March 15th the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.”

Zuckerberg said that the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult, but that he does not think people will be upset.

“I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”

Some Facebook users were furious upon hearing the shocking news.

“What am I going to do without Facebook?” said Denise Bradshaw, a high school student from Indiana. “My life revolves around it. I’m on Facebook at least 10 hours a day. Now what am I going to do with all that free time?”

However, parents across the country have been experiencing a long anticipated sense of relief.

“I’m glad the Facebook nightmare is over,” said Jon Guttari, a single parent from Detroit. “Now my teenager’s face won’t be glued to a computer screen all day. Maybe I can even have a conversation with her.”

Those in the financial circuit are criticizing Zuckerberg for walking away from a multibillion dollar franchise. Facebook is currently ranked as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists estimating its value at around 7.9 billion.

But Zuckerberg remains unruffled by these accusations. He says he will stand by his decision to give Facebook the axe.

“I don’t care about the money,” said Zuckerberg. “I just want my old life back.”

The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their personal information from the website before March 15th. After that date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.

Dad Killed on Hot Air Balloon Ride That Was Gift From Son
A scoutmaster who received a hot air balloon ride as a special New Year's treat from his teenage son was killed when the craft plunged to the ground and burst into flames, British media reported.
Allan Burnett, 55, of Bristol, was killed along with experienced balloonist Lee Pibworth in the crash Saturday morning in Somerset, southwestern England.

Burnett had gotten the New Year's Day balloon ride as a gift from his son Alex, who was Pibworth's usual co-pilot, The Telegraph and Daily Mail reported.
The Cameron A120 craft had an apparently normal liftoff from a field. The ground crew -- including Alex Burnett and Pibworth's wife, Elisabeth -- lost sight of the craft for a few moments due to cloud cover, but then it reappeared with the canopy deflated, the newspapers said.
Horrified spectators watched helplessly as the balloon began to drop like a rock from an altitude of 20,000 feet, the newspapers said. The balloon basket exploded in flames as it hit the ground at a lawn bowling club in the village of Midsomer Norton. No one on the ground was hurt.
Witness Sarah Andrews said the balloon was already on fire as it plummeted from the sky, dangerously close to some houses.
"I could hear a flapping noise almost like a very, very slow helicopter noise and I looked up and there was a hot air balloon on fire," she told The Telegraph.
"There was a big ball of fire underneath it. There was fire up one side of it and the basket was alight as well," she said. "It was coming down very quickly. I thought it was coming through the roof of the houses."
Barrie Dando, chairman of the Prattens Bowls Club, where the balloon crashed, said the craft narrowly missed some houses.
"There is private housing, terraced housing, not very far away at all and a school on the other side of the road. It could have come down on one of the houses," he told Sky News. "And on another day in the summer, people may have been out playing bowls."
Authorities said it was possible that liquid petroleum gas cylinders used to power the balloon might have ignited. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch was trying to determine what caused the accident.
Friends and colleagues were mourning Pibworth, a father of one, and Burnett, who ran the Blenheim Scouts and also served as a governor of a nearby primary school.
''RIP Allan Burnett he was a very good man and always there to help people," Liam Stevenson posted on Facebook, according to The Telegraph. "He will never be forgotten and be in our hearts. To all his family and friends we are all thinking about him."

1,000 dead birds fall from sky in Ark

Wildlife officials are trying to determine what caused more than 1,000 blackbirds to die and fall from the sky over an Arkansas town.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said Saturday that it began receiving reports about the dead birds about 11:30 p.m. the previous night. The birds fell over a 1-mile area of Beebe, and an aerial survey indicated that no other dead birds were found outside of that area.

Commission ornithologist Karen Rowe said the birds showed physical trauma, and she speculated that "the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail."

The commission said that New Year's Eve revelers shooting off fireworks in the area could have startled the birds from their roost and caused them to die from stress.

Robby King, a wildlife officer for the agency, collected about 65 dead birds, which will be sent for testing to the state Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the National Wildlife Health Center lab in Madison, Wis.

Rowe said that similar events have occurred elsewhere and that test results "usually were inconclusive." She said she doubted the birds were poisoned.

Skype crash: Software bug and server overloads blamed
Server overloads and a bug in Skype for Windows caused the two-day outage for the net phone firm.

Details of what caused the service to be unusable for millions of users prior to Christmas have been posted on the firm's blog.

The two events combined to create a cascade of problems that managed to knock out much of the network underpinning the phone service.

Skype is assessing how its network is built to stop the problem recurring.
Traffic cascade

Writing on the Skype blog, Lars Rabbe, chief information officer at the company, said the problems started on 22 December, when some of its servers that handle instant messaging started getting overloaded.

This meant that the responses they sent to Windows machines running Skype were slightly delayed. Unfortunately, a bug in one version of Skype for Windows meant this delay caused the program to crash.

About 50% of all Skype users ran the buggy 5.0.0.152 version of the software, said Mr Rabbe.

This caused problems for Skype because of the way the network supporting it is organised. Some of the data travelling round Skype's network are passed through all those machines logged on to the service.

Those participating machines act as what Skype calls "supernodes" and carry out some of the administrative tasks of the global network and help to ensure calls get through.

With a huge number of these machines offline because of the crash, the rest of the network quickly became overloaded.

Mr Rabbe wrote that the disappearance of the supernodes meant the remaining ones were swamped by traffic.

"The initial crashes happened just before our usual daily peak-hour and very shortly after the initial crash," wrote Mr Rabbe, "which resulted in traffic to the supernodes that was about 100 times what would normally be expected at that time of day."

Traffic levels were so high that they blew through the safe operating specifications supernodes usually use. As a result, more supernodes shut down.
Compensation offer

The "confluence of events", said Mr Rabbe, led to Skype being offline for about 24 hours as engineers put in place hundreds of dedicated supernodes and gradually brought the service back to life.

To ensure the outage does not happen again, Mr Rabbe said Skype would look at its update policy, to see if it should automatically move users to newer versions of its software.

A version of Skype for Windows that is free of the bug already exists, but is not automatically given to users.

It said it would also look at its network to improve capacity and get on with an investment programme that would boost this resilience.

Mr Rabbe apologised again on behalf of the company and added: "We know that we fell short in both fulfilling your expectations and communicating with you during this incident."

Skype has offered compensation to customers in the form of vouchers for pre-pay users and a free week of service for subscribers.

Skygazers hoping to catch the last lunar eclipse of 2010 on Tuesday morning best be ready to stay up late (or wake up very early) to watch the full moon as it goes through a range of dramatic color changes.

The December 21 lunar eclipse is expected to last about three-and-a-half hours from its start as a partial eclipse at 1:33 a.m. ET to its finish at 5:01 a.m. ET, according to NASA. The previous lunar eclipse occurred June 26.

During a lunar eclipse, the moon, the Earth, and the sun align so that the sun's rays are shielded from the moon. An eclipse of the moon can only take place if the moon is full, and only if the moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow, which is composed of two cone-shaped parts, one nested inside the other.
The start of the total eclipse is expected around 2:41 a.m, when the entire moon passes through the Earth's umbra, or inner shadow, which blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the moon.
The moon will take on a vibrant red color until 3:35 a.m., according to NASA.
Before and after the total eclipse, the moon will pass through the penumbra, or outer region of the Earth's shadow, where Earth blocks some of the sun's rays, but not all.
The entire event is visible from North America, Greenland and Iceland. Western Europe will see the beginning stages of the eclipse before moonset while western Asia will get the later stages after moonrise.
